Vodafone Egypt has developed a fully integrated Internet of Things (IoT) solution to transform the recently opened Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) into a global leader in smart cultural experiences.
Situated just outside Cairo, the world’s largest archaeological museum showcases priceless artefacts covering seven millennium of Egyptian history, including the entire contents of the tomb of the king Tutankhamun.
As the museum’s exclusive technological partner, Vodafone has adapted its industry-leading Managed IoT Platform to operate as the museum’s ‘smart brain’. The single, secure and locally isolated platform connects and manages all devices and 19 critical museum systems – ranging from lighting, energy, and climate control to ticketing, access control, and visitor guidance.
Real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and automated workflows allow the museum’s teams to make instant, data-driven decisions across the 500,000-square-metre site.
Real-time visibility
By integrating the data from multiple IoT sensor controllers and property equipment, the platform provides a complete real-time overview of any faulty property equipment, museum lighting, temperature and humidity, as well as environment sensors and energy consumption. This information allows museum teams to maintain control overall the entire facility.
Enhanced visitor experiences
By seamlessly connecting ticketing, parking, gate readers and wayfinding systems, the platform helps reduce queues and ease navigation for the museum’s expected 8 million annual visitors. It also facilitates immersive visitor experiences by integrating digital signage, multimedia control and content management for dynamic, real-time fault checking and notifications for better storytelling.
Sustainable resource management
Sustainability lies at the heart of Vodafone’s collaboration with GEM. Our Managed IoT Platform brings together data from lighting, energy, water and air conditioning systems to enable GEM to manage its resources more efficiently, reduce consumption and minimize environmental impact.
Scalability for the future
Designed with a flexible and scalable structure, the platform also supports the Museum’s future growth and allows seamless integration of emerging smart technologies without disrupting ongoing operations.
Vodafone Egypt’s groundbreaking collaboration with the Grand Egyptian Museum shows how technology can empower culture, strengthen sustainability and inspire future generations.
