Spanish drivers who break down in an area they don’t know and perhaps without mobile phone coverage now have a solution.

Vodafone Spain has helped usher in a new era of road safety with the sale of more than 250,000 IoT-enabled V16 Help Flash emergency lights, manufactured by Galician company Netun Solutions.

In the case of a breakdown, drivers can affix the compact, lightweight and magnetized beacons to the roof of their car and automatically send their geolocation to traffic authorities, thanks to Vodafone’s deep Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network coverage.

The new beacon emits a bright yellow flash visible in all directions for over a kilometre at night, while a pre-installed Vodafone SIM transmits the vehicle’s precise location to the Spanish Department of Traffic (DGT) control centre.

From there, the incident notification is automatically sent to the navigators, mobility applications and the on-board computers of vehicles located in the area, so that drivers can reduce speed, change lanes or take other appropriate measures to avoid an accident.

The V16 Help Flash IoT signal will be mandatory in Spain from 1 January 2026 and will replace less visible emergency triangles which drivers previously had to place on the road.

By connecting people, roads and vehicles, the pioneering IoT solution aims to reduce response times and accident fatalities, opening the way for safer Spanish road journeys.
